Defence expert Abhijit Iyer-Mitra who has been incarcerated Odisha’s Jharpada jail for over a month now, was shifted to the Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar due to ill health, Kanak News has reported.
Mitra was jailed by the Odisha government in October after being booked for a satirical twitter conversation he had over a year ago, which allegedly denigrated the state’s culture. Following this, his misery has continued thanks to two of his bail applications being rejected.
As per a report in local daily Orissa Post, Mitra was shifted to the hospital after his health worsened on Friday night (30 November). The report quotes police sources as saying that he has been ailing due to severe mental trauma.
He was earlier taken to a hospital for a check-up but had to be shifted to the medical establishment’s surgery ward after his condition further worsened.
This comes a couple of weeks after the Odisha assembly had decided to pardon him for his alleged derogatory remarks on the Sun Temple in Konark.
