After CJI Gogoi’s Intervention, Supreme Court To Hear Plea Against Felling Of Trees In Aarey Colony Today

Taking cognisance of the felling of trees in Mumbai’s Aarey colony for construction of metro car shed, a special bench of the Supreme Court (SC) will be hearing an urgent petition submitted by a group of law students against the action taken by authorities, reports Asian News International (ANI).

The decision to list the matter for urgent hearing was taken by the Chief Justice of India, Ranjan Gogoi after he received a letter from the students seeking intervention in the matter. The matter will be heard by the top court at 10 am today (7 October).

The development comes after the Bombay High Court refused to stay the cutting of trees as demanded by the protesters.

It should be noted that as a part of the project, close to 2,700 trees will be affected in total, of which as many as 461 will be lifted from the ground and relocated while the rest are slated to be axed.

The protestors have demanded that the car shed depot for the metro trains be moved from the Aarey Colony to some alternate location. The car shed is a part of the Metro Line-3 project which was recently launched by Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi.
