Kolkata witnessed high drama on Sunday evening (3 February) after the city police detained Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials who had reached the residence of Kolkata Police Chief Rajeev Kumar in connection with chit fund scam cases.
It was followed by a team of Kolkata police reaching the CBI state headquarters in the city. After the police team left, a CRPF squad was dispatched to the state headquarters.
The detained CBI officials were later released.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee too swung into action and sat on a ‘Save The Constitution’ protest along with various individuals including the Kolkata Police Chief who was earlier said to have been absconding.
Later in the evening reports claimed that Banerjee received calls from supposed Mahagathbandhan leaders like Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav, Tejashwi Yadav, Chandrababu Naidu, Mayawati, Arvind Kejriwal and others.

In response to the episode, CBI’s interim director M Nageshwar Rao has asserted that the agency will approach the Supreme Court over the West Bengal police not cooperating in the matter.
He also added that the investigation is being carried out as per the apex court’s directions.
Banerjee’s protest which began late last evening is still continuing.
