In a major development, Goa's Health Minister Vishwajit Rane has announced that all the people above 18-years of age in the State will be given Ivermectin drug to bring down the mortality rate, reports Hindustan Times.

Rane said that all the adults will be given the drug irrespective of their COVID-19 disease status. He said, patients will be given 12 mg doses for a span of five days as expert panels from the United Kingdom (UK), Italy, Spain and Japan have found a statistically significant reduction in mortality, time to recovery, and viral clearance.

Rane said that he has given instructions for the immediate implementation of prophylaxis treatment. He also emphasised that the treatment will not prevent COVID-19, but can help in reducing mortality.

Rane said, "The Ivermectin 12 mg tablet will be made available in all the district, sub-district, PHCs, CHCs, sub-health centres, rural dispensaries for people to collect and start treatment immediately, irrespective of any symptoms or anything."
