All Seats In 23 IITs Filled For The First Time In 2019, Reveals HRD Ministry

For the first time, all seats in the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) across India have been filled, reports the Hindu.

Human Resource Development Higher Education Secretary R Subrahmanyam said: “There have been a total of 13,604 undergraduate admissions in IITs this year with nil vacant seats. This is the first time ever to fill all seats in all IITs leaving no vacant seats which have been achieved by proactive cooperation of all IITs”.

Last year, a total of 118 seats in 23 IITs did not have takers. Back then, HRD minister Prakash Javadekar said the seats were vacant as students did not show interest in certain disciplines.

For the past five years, excluding 2014, the number of vacant seats at IITs has been a rising trend. To address the same, the HRD ministry set up a panel which made recommendations.

The committee recommended IITs to review seats in every discipline based on employment opportunities, national requirement, available infrastructure and future scope. It was also suggested to streamline the counselling process by having multiple rounds and other proactive measures like a helpline to help students choose.
