Amid Lockdown, Government Asks 92,000 NGOs To Assist Local Authorities In Ensuring Food, Shelter For Migrant Workers

The government has roped in over 92,000 non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to help the state governments and local authorities in ensuring the access to food, shelter and other needs of the migrant workers who have been affected by the 21-days-long nationwide lockdown imposed to contain the spread of Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, reports Times of India.

According to the report, the government in a letter to all the NGOs on the NGO Darpan portal and has asked them to help the district administration in setting up community kitchens and providing shelter to the migrants and homeless individuals in the cities.

The government has also sought help from the civil society organisations in the task of distributing personal protective equipment (PPE) kits and items such as soaps, sanitisers, masks and gloves among community workers and volunteers.

It has also asked the NGOs to help in ensuring greater awareness about prevention, hygiene, social distancing, isolation and combating stigma, while also asking them to depute volunteers and care-givers to deliver services to the elderly, specially-abled individuals, children, transgenders and other vulnerable groups.
