Amidst Growing Interest In Sanskrit, More Canadian Schools Embrace Study Of The Ancient Language

Toronto District School Board (TDSB) is the first major city school to offer Sanskrit education, the language with more than 3,500-year history is taught to children from Kindergarten to Grade 8. The success of the program is the work of a non-profit organisation Samskrita Bharati. The organisation started in 2014 promotes the ancient language.

The language is taught every Saturday morning at the Cornell Public School where nearly two dozen children attend them. Following the footsteps of TDSB many other school boards have started Sanskrit classes, they are Peel District Board in towns of Mississauga and Brampton, reports Hindustan Times.

The organisation in the last three years has been promoting Sanskrit beyond the veneration of the language as a classical or exotic but also a contemporary one with daily usage. Speaking on the same, Samskrita Bharati President Harsha Thakkar said “This is amazing and beyond our expectations. We started with just a handful of volunteers and now there are as many as seven classes in the GTA.”

Sanskrit will now join the list of other Indian Languages that are taught in Canada Schools like that of Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, Tamil, Marathi and Gujarati.
