Army, Assam Rifles Rescue 24,000 Civilians From Violence-Hit Manipur; Special Forces Deployed At Sensitive India-Myanmar Border

Army and Assam Rifles personnel have rescued 24,000 civilians from violence-hit districts of Manipur, helping civil authorities control the situation.

Security sources report that approximately 9,500 Meiteis and 10,000 Kuki community members have been rescued and are currently residing in company-operating bases and military garrisons.

Around 125 columns of Army and Assam Rifles were deployed in Manipur after the recent outbreak of violence, representing one of the largest security force movements in a single state, excluding Jammu and Kashmir.

Most residents of the worst-affected areas Churachandpur and Imphal have been evacuated, according to sources.

Troops escorted people between Moreh and Imphal on Monday (8 May), helping to reduce tensions. The individuals were taken to a location of their choice for comfort, according to a source.

To maintain law and order, the Army and Assam Rifles are conducting flag marches and patrols.

Special forces have been deployed at the India-Myanmar border to address potential concerns, according to sources cited by The Indian Express.

Helpline numbers were launched earlier to aid veterans, soldiers, and civilians.

On Sunday (7 May), 676 individuals, mostly students, were accompanied from Manipur to Nagaland by the Assam Rifles and state officials. An additional group of civilians were slated for travel on Monday.

Other states, too, have been evacuating their citizens from violence-hit areas in Manipur.

According to a statement from a defence spokesperson on Monday, surveillance in Manipur has been significantly enhanced in the past 96 hours with increased employment of aviation assets like unmanned aerial vehicles and helicopters.

These assets have been brought to the state for surveillance purposes both in the hinterland and along the India-Myanmar border.

The Army and Assam Rifles in Manipur have been more effective with the use of their assets, which have contributed to the prevention of insurgent groups based out of the Manipur valley attempting any misadventure across the Indo-Myanmar border.

These assets have yielded good results in both the hinterland and the border areas, according to the statement.
