At a time when Gangetic dolphins are being spotted in different parts of Ganga, the mammal is known to also have returned to the Hooghly river. Here, its population is said to be decreasing.

The days following the nationwide lockdown, it is said, have helped the Gangetic dolphins spur towards revival.

Amid the good change, an incident of torturing the animal to death by young men has surfaced in Bengal.

The exact location of the incident hasn’t been ascertained, but the place is believed to be on the banks of Hooghly -- between Kolkata and Burdwan.

This report claims that the incident came to light after a man named Rafiku Saihk uploaded a video -- via Vigo Video ID 80826578705 -- on the internet. "The video shows a group of men holding the dolphin by its snout and tail and basically torturing it," the report says.

The mammal is believed to be an infant. Owing to its age, its sensitive skin, and the torture that it had to undergo, it is being said that the dolphin may have died.

There is another video from the same user that shows the dolphin being released into the waters in a bloodied state.

The Gangetic Dolphin is a vital part of the Gangetic ecosystem, and efforts have been made to protect and conserve its population in the holy river.
