Since its liberation in 1971, Bangladesh has partnered with India in a mutually beneficial relationship on various issues, from sharing waters to the landmark 2015 boundary agreement. However, in the race to become the most subscribed channel on YouTube, some Bangladeshi fans of the Swedish comedian, PewDiePie, have rallied against India’s T-Series. It is not uncommon to find posters in Dhaka, asking the comedian to increase the number of subscribers and retain his crown as the undisputed king of YouTube, report Dhaka Tribune.
For the past five years, PewDiePie was the most subscribed channel on YouTube. His supremacy was so undisputed that even his biggest competitors only had nearly half of his subscriber count, except one: T-Series. Slowly, but steadily, the Indian music label, acquired subscribers by releasing music hits, year after year.
It was reported in October that T-Series was all set to overtake the crown from PewDiePie. Some of his fans even started online campaigns to delay, if not stop, the inevitable. However, going by the number of subscribers being added to both the channels, its only a matter of days, if not hours, for T-series to gain the top spot.
The success of T-Series can be partly attributed to the rise of cheap mobile data rates and the availability of affordable smartphones in the country.
