Violence rocked West Bengal's Cooch Behar where a total of five people were killed, reports Hindustan Times.

As per reports, about an hour after the polling began in West Bengal's 44 constituencies, the Sitalkuchi constituency in Cooch Behar saw an 18-years-old first-time voter Ananda Barman being shot down in broad daylight. The authorities have arrested two people in the matter.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has asserted that Barman was a party supporter. As per the party's Cooch Behar district committee president Malati Rava Roy, Barman's elder brother is the head of the local committee under Boleynauhati gram panchayat.

However, the TMC has claimed that he was shot down by BJP supporters. Following the incident, violence erupted between the workers and supporters of the two parties near booth number 285.

In another incident, the central forces on poll duty were attacked in the same constituency, as a result of which four persons were killed in retaliatory action by the forces.

The Superintendent of Police Debashish Dhar in a video has claimed that a team of CISF personnel were attacked by a mob of 300-350 weapon wielding people, who also attempted to snatch the rifles of the CISF jawans.

During the ensuing scuffle and fighting the CISF personnel opened fire in self-defence which led to the four deaths.
