Indian Institute of Management - Bangalore and Ahmedabad have submitted a proposal to add 805 more seats in their management courses, Times of India has reported. Currently, the collective capacity of IIMs are 12,411 and will become 13,216 after the proposal is approved.

The respective proposals have been sent to the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD). IIM-B has pitched for 425 seats and IIM-A for 380. Loans have been asked for from the higher education financing agency (HEFA) for creating necessary infrastructure to accommodate the additional strength.

Director of IIM-B Prof G Raghuram was quoted by the report as saying that the institute has applied for a loan in the range of Rs 200 crore. It is expected to cover the investment needed for additional infrastructure.

The professor also added that the institute is currently not in a position to accommodate all students owing to which the expansion is necessary.

Once the expansion is done, IIM-B will have 112 one-BHK rooms, 112 studio rooms, 1,400-seater dining room, 340 hostel rooms.

Since the PG programmes have the biggest demand in IIM Bangalore, Raghuram added that bringing the students staying off campus onto the campus would improve the learning ecosystem.

The institute is also mulling over expanding the program in two sections. Raghuram also stressed that the institute values its doctoral programme (FPM), both from the perspective of supporting faculty research and contributing to the much-needed academic resources in various top-rated management schools in India.
