Out of 258.2 million Jan Dhan bank accounts in the country, biggest deposits were made in just 40 accounts, income tax department led investigation revealed on 11 December. If the report published by Business Standard is true, the department found only 1,950 Jan Dhan accounts where more than Rs 3 lakh had been deposited in the three weeks since November 8. A total sum of Rs 39,000 crore has found its way into Jan Dhan accounts.

According to the report, about 75 per cent (Swarajya- 23.27 per cent) of Jan Dhan accounts had zero balance before demonetisation was announced. By 7 December, the number came down to just 23.11 per cent. This led people to believe that a large number of Jan Dhan accounts had been used to launder black money.

Data provided by the finance ministry reveals that Rs 20,206 crore was deposited in the Jan Dhan accounts in the first week. In the second week, Rs 11,347 crore was deposited. The inflow into Jan Dhan accounts fell to Rs 4,867 crore in the third week. The total deposit in the Jan Dhan accounts has now reached Rs 74,609.5 crore.

According to a finance ministry release, the income tax department has identified bank accounts and branches where the inflow of Jan Dhan deposits have been more than normal .The accounts are now being monitored. With trackers in place, any transfer to another account will be recorded.
