Continuing its winning streak ahead of assembly polls, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won all the five municipal corporations, The Economic Times reports.
The BJP swept Ranchi, Medninagar, Adityapur, Hazaribagh and Giridih municipal corporations, polls for which were held on party lines for the first time. The party also captured nine out of 13 Nagar Panchayats, seven out of 16 Municipal Councils and won the bypoll to the chairperson’s seat in Jhumri Tilaiya Nagar.
The elections were held for five Municipal Corporations (Nagar Nigam), 16 Municipal Councils (Nagar Parishad) and 13 Nagar Panchayats in Jharkhand on 16 April. The BJP also performed well in the Nagar Parishad, winning at least seven posts of president and five posts of vice president in the Nagar Parishads.
The BJP surged ahead of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and the Congress, which are likely to have a tie-up in the 2019 parliamentary and assembly elections. The two parties, however, participated in the urban body polls separately.
In Nagar Panchayat elections, the BJP won nine president and five vice-president posts. While the JMM won four president posts and two vice president posts, the Congress party could win two president posts and three vice-president posts.
BJP’s victory is significant in view of the upcoming assembly polls in the state.
