Cinema star and Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) chief Kamal Haasan lost the Tamil Nadu assembly elections to BJP national women’s wing president Vanathi Srinivasan from the Coimbatore South assembly constituency.

Vanathi polled 53,209 votes whereas Hassan bagged 51,481 votes in a neck-to-neck battle whose result was announced late last night.

Mayura Jayakumar, the state working president of the Congress party, had also fought the contest on a DMK ticket. She finished third in the race after 41,426 individuals cast their vote for her.

Hassan had maintained a sizable lead over Vanathi Srinivasan since the counting of the votes began from early Sunday morning onward, Times of India reports.

However, the BJP leader gained an advantage over the iconic film star once the 23rd round of counting kicked off in the evening. She developed a sizeable lead over Hassan in that phase and held on to it for the final two rounds to eventually emerge victorious in the highly-anticipated contest.

Overall, the BJP capped off a fairly impressive performance in Tamil Nadu as it opened its account to bag four seats in the state.
