In Amroha district of Uttar Pradesh, a Bharatiya Janata Party functionary, who was trying to explain the benefits of the recently amended Citizenship Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC) to locals, was attacked, reports Times Of India.

Murtaja Aga Qazmi, who is the the district general secretary of BJP’s minority wing, was allegedly heckled and then thrashed at Lakada Mohalla in Amroha on Friday (27 December). An FIR has been registered at the local police station.

The leader of the minority wing and a member of outreach program, was trying to clear doubt and elucidate, particularly the Muslims, that “CAA and NRC will not take away the rights and citizenship of Muslims living in India, and they should refrain from protesting against the Act”.

“I went to a shop at Lakada Mohalla of Amroha on Friday (27 December) and was trying to spread awareness among Muslims about CAA and NRC. During the session, one Raza Ali suddenly attacked me. He tried to strangle me and I somehow managed to escape. I have filed an FIR against him,” Qazmi said.

Amroha superintendent of police, Vipin Tada, told TOI, “Murtaja Qazmi has alleged that he was attacked by a man while explaining CAA at a shop. We have registered a case against the accused who was arrested on Friday evening.”
