In a bid to discard its image as a ’saffron’ party, the Uttar Pradesh BJP will soon appoint around 100 women as ‘teen talaq pramukhs’ to aid in the rehabilitation of the victims and their children, reports The Hindu.
Secretary of the UP BJP minority wing, Nazia Alam, will be in-charge overall. The triple talaq pramukhs will be appointed for each district and regional unit of the party in the State. “Educated women who have sound knowledge of the Shariat and the law and who can bring social change in the lives of the victims of triple talaq will be appointed as pramukhs,” Ms Alam said.
She also added that candidates would be chosen after Deepavali, followed by a survey in December to get an accurate number of triple talaq victims in the state.
The BJP-led NDA government had taken the ordinance route to make Triple Talaq a punishable offence in September, while the Supreme Court declared that the age-old practice was unconstitutional.
