Former Uttar Pradesh chief minister and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati today (18 July) submitted her resignation from the Rajya Sabha, reports ANI.

Earlier today, the BSP supremo alleged that she wasn’t being allowed to speak in the Rajya Sabha by the chair on matters pertaining to the ill-treatment of Dalits in Uttar Pradesh. Criticising the Yogi Adityanath government in the state for its handling of the Saharanpur violence, she said, “Let me speak or I will resign”.

When I tried speaking about the weaker sections today in the Rajya Sabha, I was not allowed to speak. Why? It’s a shame. If I am not allowed to speak on Dalits being targeted, then I will resign from the Rajya Sabha. Since the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has come to power, there have been atrocities on Dalits and minorities starting from Rohith Vemula in Hyderabad, then the Gau Rakshaks
Mayawati

Mayawati’s walk-out from the upper house was met with mixed reactions with Samajwadi Party (SP) member Azam Khan advising her to not resign and focus on the 2019 general elections instead. The Congress demanded adjournment of the session and said it was “disturbing” to know that a Dalit leader wasn’t being allowed to speak in Parliament.

It is the most disgusting thing that happened today when a Dalit leader was not been allowed to speak in the Assembly. Things like lynching and communal unrest is acceptable in the country but when a leader, a woman or a person from Dalit community wants to express then she is not allowed. And the government expects us to keep quite on all these matters.
