Darjeeling is currently witness to the eighth day of an indefinite strike, called by the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha.

To arrest the spread of violence, the Calcutta High Court has asked the centre to send four more companies of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) to Darjeeling.

This is in addition to the 11 companies of the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) that have already been deployed in the stir-hit hills.

As reported by the Press Trust of India, a division bench comprising acting Chief Justice Nishita Mhatre and Justice T Chakraborty ordered the additional forces to handle the violence in the hills, which have seen an indefinite bandh for the last one month as it demands a separate state. It also asked the state government to make additional forces available from its resources.
