Kerala Catholic Bishops Council (KCBC) in a set of guidelines has appealed to its followers to be vigilant while practising yoga so that they do not embrace Hinduism during meditation, News18 has reported.

“Though it may be claimed that it is secular, Christians must be vigilant against the fact that they should not be embracing another religion (Hinduism in this case) while practising meditation”, claimed the guidelines in context of practising yoga.

The guidelines which were issued publicly a week ago added that any religious practice which does not accept that Christ is the path to salvation is not acceptable to Christianity. It thus said that chanting prayers of any other faith (Hinduism) while practising yoga is undesirable and unacceptable.

A similar resistance has also been witnessed in case of Muslim groups like the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) which had asked Muslims to shun Surya Namaskara and yoga.

A Muslim yoga instructor from Jharkhand was also issued a fatwa ordering her to stop it and when she resisted, ransacked her house.
