The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is all set to introduce a new subject “Health Sciences” for students of class IX to XII, reports the Indian Express.

This subject will impart the basics of primary healthcare and will be added to the existing CBSE syllabus. Ministry of Family Welfare will develop the course on health sciences along with All India Institute of Medical Sciences.

“We did a small survey before planning a course on awareness related to basic health relief like what needs to be immediately done if a dog bites before visiting a doctor. We found that many are not yet aware of basic primary healthcare needs.” IANS quoted an official saying.

The new syllabus would also contain guidelines on how to respond during medical emergencies like heart attack etc.

“Patients during emergencies reach hospitals at critical conditions due to the lack of basic knowledge. Many lives can be saved if some basic steps are followed,” the official added.

The new syllabus is reportedly being reviewed by the Ministry of Human Resource Decelopment and would be introduced in the next academic session.
