Centre Clears Jallikattu Ordinance, President’s Assent Required

The centre has approved an ordinance revoking the ban on Jallikattu, reported ANI. The ordinance was placed before the Law, Environment and Culture ministries by the Tamil Nadu government. It will now require President Pranab Mukherjee’s assent.

It has been four days since protests began swelling at Marina Beach in Chennai and for several days in other parts of Tamil Nadu.

The Supreme Court today (20 January) said it won’t be passing an interim order for a week. For his part, though, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam has said the ancient bull-taming sport will return to the state in a couple of days. The ball is now in the President’s court.
