The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is testing the Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) that will inform the authorities even about the validity of the vehicle’s registration, pollution control certificate, and other documents.
ATMS will also notify the concerned authorities whether the travellers wear the seat belt, Hindustan Times reports.
The mechanism will be availing information regarding the vehicle’s insurance, age, pollution certificate, and the CNG kit testing certificate through the number plate.
The viability of fitness certificates will also be checked by the system concerning commercial vehicles.
The system is slated to be integrated across all the expressways in the country, and it will thus be connected to the vehicle database of the transport department.
Accordingly, ATMS will share data with the local traffic police regarding the invalidity of any vehicle’s papers.
The police will then roll out challans to them as they won’t have to place barricades on the roads and instead only fine those vehicles that ATMS has marked out.
The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways plans to install this system mandatory in all the national highways and expressways being constructed currently.
As of now, it is being put through tests on Delhi-Meerut Expressway and Eastern Peripheral Expressway in the NCR region.
