China-Proposed UNSC Statement On Karachi Attack Halted As Other Members Unhappy Over Pakistan Blaming India

The United Nations Security Council statement, pushed by China, on Karachi Stock Exchange terror attack has now been delayed as other members of the council were reportedly unhappy over Pakistan's attempts to blame India for the act, Hindustan Times reported.

The attack on Pakistan Stock Exchange on Monday (29 June) left at least 19 people dead including four fighters, reportedly from the Balochistan Liberation Army.

According to diplomatic sources cited in the report, such statements are regularly issued by the UNSC after a terror attack to condemn it. This statement which was proposed by China and put under silence till 4:00pm, as per United States East Coast Time).

However, at the last minute fellow UNSC members raised an objection to the statement due to uncalled remarks by Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and Foreign Minister Makdoom Shah Mehmood Qureshi to put the blame on India, which is an elect non-permanent member of the UNSC.

It is worth mentioning here that India has completely rejected the allegations made by Pakistan leaders and denied any role in the gruesome attack.

While Chinese diplomats at the UNSC were frustrated over the last minute halting of the statement, others believed that Pakistan had spoilt the atmosphere and the council should not involve itself in this matter anymore.

The statement, however, might be issued later after deliberation on the points that were objected to by some members.
