Issuing a threat to Bangladesh, China has said that a decision by the country to consider any kind of participation in the Quad grouping will lead to a degrading of bilateral ties, reports Times of India.

Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Li Jiming said that the bilateral ties between the two countries will be "substantially damaged" if the country engages with the four-nation grouping which comprises the United States (US), Australia, Japan and India.

Speaking to Bangladeshi journalists in Dhaka in a blunt and no-holds-barred fashion, Jiming said, "We do not want any form of participation of Bangladesh in this alliance". He made the assertion while stressing that Beijing sees the Quad as an anti-China grouping.

Jiming also shared that the message had also been conveyed to Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina's government by the Chinese Defence Minister Wei Fenghe during his visit to the country last week.

It should be noted that China's push comes at a time when the Indian-Bangladeshi ties have been on an upswing for several years now.
