Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi has called off his week-long foreign trip before retirement in November to channel the time into writing judgments for crucial cases like Ayodhya's land title dispute, clean chit to the Government of India on the Rafale fighter jet deal and the entry of women into Sabarimala's Ayyapa temple, reports Times of India.

The cancellation of CJI's foreign trip also comes amidst the hearings on a petition seeking to bring the CJI's own office under the purview of the Right to Information (RTI) Act.

The petition filed by RTI activist Subhash Chandra Agrawal is being heard by a five-judge bench headed by the CJI.

CJI along with his to be successor, Justice SA Bobde was set to attend the golden jubilee function of Egypt's Constitutional Court next week. However, both the CJI and Justice Bobde have called off their visit to Cairo given judicial commitments at the Supreme Court presently.

CJI was thereafter set to travel to New York in the United States, Toronto in Canada and Bali in Indonesia in a multi-nation tour.

The tour now stands cancelled despite having been planned and scheduled much in advance.
