Tourism sector alone has created 1.46 crore jobs in last four years, Minister for State for Tourism (Independent Charge) K J Alphons has said, as reported by Business Standard.
He also said that tourism sector provides job opportunities for both skilled and unskilled labour. The minister also refuted the recent reports which has categorised India as unsafe for women and said that his ministry has taken several initiatives to ensure safety of tourists. He added that 14 states already have ‘Tourist Police’ to safeguard visitors.
The minister also spoke about the several initiatives the government has taken to promote Indian tourism abroad like ‘Incredible India Road Shows’ in the United States and Europe.
He also highlighted the government’s efforts to promote ‘Cruise Tourism’ and said that the ministry is investing Rs 100 crore for the development of cruise tourism adding that Rs 250 crore has been received from Shipping Ministry as corpus.
The minister also spoke about the promotion of tourism in North-Eastern states and highlighted the largest cave network in Asia in Meghalaya as an example of the tourism opportunities in the region.
The news comes as a setback for the opposition which has been claiming that sufficient job opportunities have not been created since the Narendra Modi government came to power.
