Jaideep Kawade, leader of the People’s Republican Party (PRP) in Maharashtra, was arrested and later released on bail on Wednesday (3 April) for making misogynistic remarks against Union Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party leader Smriti Irani at an election rally on 1 April at Bagadganj of Nagpur, reports Times of India.
The PRP is an ally of the Congress in Maharashtra. The party is headed by Dalit leader and Member of Legislative Council (MLC) Jogendra Kawade, father of Jaideep Kawade.
According to an Asian Age report, the police said that Kawade had made objectionable remarks against Irani while addressing an election rally in Nagpur. A video of his speech had gone viral on social media. Kawade had made the distasteful remarks in the context of Irani wearing a big ‘bindi’ on her forehead.
“Let me tell you something about her. I have heard that the bindi gets bigger as she changes husbands”, Kawade was quoted as saying.
Following this, Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) workers had Tuesday filed a complaint against Kawade and a few other congress leaders with returning officer of Nagpur Lok Sabha constituency against Kawade, Times of India has reported.
As per the TOI report, demanding action against Kawade and Nagpur Congress candidate Nana Patole, the women members of BJP, led by mayor Nanda Jichhkar, had gone to meet the city police chief BK Upadhyay on Wednesday (3 April). However, the police had reportedly registered the case, made the arrest and released the accused on bail before their visit.
