The Congress party on Monday (2 December) was sent a show-cause notice by the Income Tax (IT) department on charges of receiving Rs 170 crore in form party funding via hawala channels, India Today has reported.

This black money was allegedly funnelled to the party via a Hyderabad based firm. The funds were allegedly siphoned-off by the company from government projects using bogus billings.

The show cause notice was served by the IT department after the party had failed to furnish the required documents to establish flow of money. The IT department had also summoned four Congress leaders last month but they decided not to show up.

As per a Press Trust of India report, this development is part of an IT probe into a Rs 3,300 hawala racket which was unearthed last month.
