Congress Presidential Polls May Be Deferred Till 2022 Due To Fresh Covid-19 Outbreak: Report

The Indian National Congress (INC) is set to defer the polls for its presidential post until next year due to the recent mass surge of Covid-19 cases across the country. The concerned election was set to take place in the last week of May in either Rajasthan or Delhi.

However, a group of party leaders wish for the polls to be conducted after the much-anticipated Uttar Pradesh (UP) assembly elections in 2022.

On the other hand, the party is keenly awaiting the results of the five state polls whose results will be declared earlier next month. Congress has its hopes hinged on Assam and Kerala and certain politicians will strongly vouch for Rahul Gandhi to be reinstated in the presidential post given that it achieves successful results in the given two states.

However, the Sunday Guardian has quoted sources claiming that the Gandhi scion will display hesitance to accept back the post that he had stepped down from following Congress’ debacle in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Thus, the polls may also be held after the declaration of the assembly results of UP, Uttarakhand and Punjab too. This way, the party aims to assess Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s performance in UP before taking a final call on the new party president. Currently, Sonia Gandhi has been holding the post on an interim basis for close to two years now.
