Led by president Sourav Ganguly, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Saturday (28 March) announced a donation of Rs 51 crore to the Prime Minister's Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations fund (PM CARES) to add to the nation's fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, reports Times of India.
The BCCI said that along with its State associations, it shall continue to monitor and work closely with the Government of India, various state governments and other regulatory bodies to provide support in the hour of adversity.
Meanwhile, it should be noted that former legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar also donated Rs 25 lakh each to the PM's relief fund and the Chief Minister (CM) of Maharashtra's relief fund. Similarly, ace Indian cricketer Suresh Raina also announced a contribution of Rs 31 lakh to PM CARES fund and Rs 21 lakh to Uttar Pradesh (UP) CM’s disaster relief fund.
The nation has witnessed several noted personalities from the sports fraternity come forward to contribute to the nation's fight to contain the COVID-19 pandemic. Indian sprinter Hima Das has donated her salary for a month to the Assam Government's relief fund for COVID-19. Similar announcements have also been announced by shuttler PV Sindhu and wrestler Bajrang Punia.
