Delhi Won’t Give Any Relaxations From 20 April: CM Kejriwal Concerned About Exponential Surge In COVID-19 Cases

As the number of coronavirus cases continues to grow in Delhi, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced on Sunday (19 April) there will be no relaxations in the lockdown from Monday in capital city until a review meeting with experts is held on 27 April.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his 14 April address had said areas that have reduced the danger of turning into COVID-19 hotspots will be allowed to restart certain economic activities from 20 April, provided they follow all norms of social distancing.

However, the Delhi CM said, “Delhi has 11 districts and all of them have been declared hotspots. As per the central government, restrictions cannot be relaxed in containment zones.”

"Keeping in mind the lives of all Delhi residents, we have that there will be no relaxation in lockdown norms from tomorrow. We will sit in a meeting with all experts again on 27 April and review the situation. If need be, the lockdown norms will be relaxed after that," he was quoted as saying in an India Today report.

While hinting that any ease in the strictness of the lockdown, CM Kejriwal said it would be very difficult to provide quality treatment to an extremely high number patients.

So far 1,893 coronavirus positive cases have been reported in Delhi from including over 75 hotspot areas. While, 207 people have been cured, 43 have lost their lives in the capital city.
