Did Not Get A Holiday On Gandhi Jayanti? Tamil Nadu To Initiate Legal Action Against Guilty Businesses

Legal action will be initiated against, 229 shops, 1,071 catering establishments, 169 motor transport establishments and 15 plantations in the State for denying employees holiday on Gandhi Jayanthi on Tuesday (October 2), according to an official statement, as reported by NIE.

Special Inspections were conducted in Chennai, Coimbatore, Tiruchirapalli and Madurai on Gandhi Jayanthi by a task force headed by the Assistant Commissioner of Labour (Enforcement) under the Tamil Nadu Industrial Establishment (National, Festival and Special Holidays) Act according to the statement.

As per the Tamil Nadu Industrial Establishment (National, Festival and Special Holidays) Act, 1958, it is statutory that every establishment is bound to declare national holidays for nine days: Republic Day, May Day, Independence Day and Gandhi Jayanthi day and five festival holidays.

The 150th Gandhi Jayanti was celebrated with fanfare across the country on 2 October. It remains to be seen what sort of punishment the Tamil Nadu government initiates against the business found guilty.
