In a major bid to counter the growing menace of pollution in Delhi and the associated cities which comprise the National Capital Region (NCR), the Environment Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority (EPCA) on Monday (7 October) decreed a ban on the usage of diesel generator sets in the region, reports the Times of India.
The ban shall come into effect on 15 October in the cities of Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, Noida, Sonipat, Bahadurgarh, Panipat and Greater Noida. It should be noted that EPCA had banned the usage of diesel generator sets in Delhi last year itself.
The usage of the diesel generator sets will only be allowed in housing societies for emergency purposes like keeping lifts operational during power outages, as per the order pronounced by the EPCA on Monday.
The decision has been taken by EPCA under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). The other decisions taken under GRAP also include immediate implementation of mechanised sweeping and sprinkling of roads, increasing the frequency of the Delhi Metro and bus services, stoppage on the use of coal and firewood in hotels et cetera.
