India has tested the vertical launch short-range surface-to-air Missile (VL-SRSAM) from a warship off the coast of Chandipur, Odisha.
The successful test of the missile was conducted by the Defence Research and Development Organization and the Indian Navy.
"This success will further enhance the defence capability of Indian Naval Ships against the aerial threats," Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said.
The missile is capable of neutralising aerial threats at close ranges, including sea-skimming targets. Sea-skimming is the practice of flying low, close to the surface of the water, to avoid detection.
The missile was tested against a high-speed aerial target mimicking aircraft.
"The flight path of the vehicle along with health parameters were monitored using a number of tracking instruments deployed by the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur," the DRDO said in a statement.
