Drones Making Their Way Into Agriculture: World Economic Forum To Leverage Devices To Collect Data In India

World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Centre For Fourth Industrial Revolution (C4IR) will work on the agriculture sector as it starts operations later this year, Business Standard has reported. C4IR’s projects will be implemented in collaboration with state governments.

C4IR has planned one of its projects in partnership with Maharashtra state government. The project’s theme will “drones and tomorrow’s airspace”. The data collected through drones will be used for enhancing agricultural data in the state. Currently, agriculture data is collected through satellites or crop cutting experiments. Agricultural data is essential for insurance companies and fertiliser companies.

These drones will gather better images as they fly at a lower heights. The data captured by them will be stored and analysed by a software. Sensors embedded in the soil will also complement the data collected by the drones. Real-time information collected through drones is likely to help all the stakeholders as it will assist in enhancing crop productivity and disease detection.
