Dwarf Planet Alert! ‘The Goblin’ Discovered At The Fringe Of Solar System

International Astronomical Union’s (IAU) minor planet centre has announced the New Dwarf planet named ‘2015TG387’, Washington Post has reported. The celestial body was first observed in October 2015 from Subaru telescope at Hawaii’s Mauna Kea Observatories. The new dwarf planet has been nicknamed as ‘the Goblin’.

‘The Goblin’ has a 300-kilometre diameter, which is on the lower side of a dwarf planet. This planet is six times smaller than Pluto. Astronomers from Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington, Northern Arizona University, University of Hawaii and the University of Oklahoma were involved in the discovery of the celestial body.

The celestial body stays outside the giant planet region at a distance beyond 65 astronomical unit (AU). At its farthest, the Goblin reaches a distance of 2300 AU, where one astronomical unit is equal to the average distance between the earth and sun. This discovery will help not only understand the composition of the solar system but also the gravitational forces that sculpted it.
