The Editors Guild of India has approached the Election Commission over the growing number of attacks on journalists in West Bengal. It has urged the election monitoring body to take action against the culprits, while condemning the several incidents of physical assaults on media personnel, reports PTI.

It said, “Physical attacks against journalists are always reprehensible, but particularly so during elections, as they undermine fair media scrutiny of an election.”

Many incidents have come to light during the ongoing Lok Sabha polls in West Bengal where TMC workers have physically assaulted and attacked journalists who are covering elections in the state. Journalists belonging to various media outlets like NewsX, ABP Ananda and Zee News faced attacks while covering the fifth phase of the polling.

In an incident, a reporter and photographer were attacked after they published an interview of Amit Shah in their newspaper Sangbad Pratidin, in another a journalist was attacked when she was trying to cover booth capturing by TMC workers.

Even as many such incidents are reported and captured by the media daily, there hasn’t been any action yet, either from the EC or by the central government.
