At least eight patients died after a fire broke out in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a private Covid-19 designated hospital in Ahmedabad on Thursday (6 August) morning, Hindustan Times reported citing officials.
At around 3:00am on Thursday, a fire accident took place at the Shrey Hospital in Navrangpura area of Ahmedabad, according to officials.
Among the dead, five are reported to be males and three females.
Apart form the eight dead, nearly 40 other patients suffered injuries and have now been shifted to a civic hospital.
Taking to Twitter, Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi said he was saddened at the incident and offered his condolences to the families of the deceased. The PM also dialled up Gujarat Chief Minister (CM) VIjay Rupani to enquire about the matter.
"Saddened by the tragic hospital fire in Ahmedabad. Condolences to the bereaved families. May the injured recover soon. Spoke to CM Vijay Rupani ji and Mayor Bijal Patel ji regarding the situation. Administration is providing all possible assistance to the affected," the PM wrote.

The cause behind the tragedy was not known yet at the time of writing this report.
