Facebook Inc is planning to hire 10000 people in the European Union (EU) in the coming five years in order to build the metaverse, which is a nascent online world where people exist and thus communicate in shared virtual spaces.
The company has committed $50 million towards setting up this metaverse. Other establishments like Epic Games and Roblox Corp are already actively engaged in this segment.
Back in July, Facebook said that it was forming a product team in order to work on the metaverse. It would be a part of the Facebook Reality Labs, which is its augmented reality and virtual reality group.
“This investment (in new jobs) is a vote of confidence in the strength of the European tech industry and the potential of European tech talent,” Facebook’s statement was quoted in a report by the Reuters.
Apparently, Facebook executives have been projecting the metaverse as the ‘next big thing’ after mobile internet.
On the other hand, the social media giant strongly defended its approach in tackling hate speech amidst an article by the Wall Street Journal examining Facebook’s inability to detect and remove hateful and excessively violent posts.
