The Anantnag fidayeen attack, in which five CRPF personnel were martyred, was carried out by a terrorist trained in Pakistan, reports The Hindu.
The fidayeen (one on a suicide mission) acted alone while killing the personnel in the initial burst of fire. He walked towards a police vehicle when a CRPF team was withdrawing from duty and opened fire at them from close range, an official said explaining how the horror unfolded.
“The CRPF men were bunched together as they were trying to get into the vehicle and were killed in the initial burst of fire. The encounter lasted for around seven minutes. The militant also lobbed grenades and emptied the entire AK-47 magazine, firing at the security personnel from 15-20 metres. He came to die,” said the official.
It is said that the terrorists must have reconnaissance of the entire area to gather insights of the movements of the troops.
The ever-busy Khanbal-Pahalgam road, where the attack took place is the main approach road to the Amarnath shrine. With the Amarnath Yatra commencing from first of July, more than two lakh pilgrims are expected to visit the shrine.
Security arrangements are revived in the wake of the attack. Around 30,000 men will be guarding the Yatra.
