Following Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s decision to rename Faizabad district as Ayodhya, the Gujarat government on Tuesday said it was keen on renaming Ahmedabad as ‘Karnavati’, if permitted under law, DNA has reported.

Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel said the Gujarat government was open to changing Ahmedabad's name once it gained the required legal and political support.

"People feel that Ahmedabad should be renamed Karnavati. If we get the required legal support, we are ready to change the name of the city," DNA quoted Patel while speaking to reporters.

Ahmedabad is India's only city donning the 'World Heritage' tag.

Yogi Adityanath had earlier said that "Ayodhya is a symbol of our 'aan, baan aur shaan' (honour, pride and prestige),". He has already renamed Allahabad as Prayagraj.

The Yogi government had, in October, restored the original name of Allahabad, and this has been the subject of much discussion and debate. The government has renamed the city, the seat of the high court and the state public service commission, to ‘Prayagraj’.
