The Samajwadi Party (SP) on Monday (29 April) replaced its Varanasi candidate Shalini Yadav with former Border Security Force (BSF) jawan Tej Bahadur Yadav, who will now contest against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, reports The New Indian Express.

According to the report, the ex-BSF trooper, a resident of Rewari in Haryana, was dismissed after complaining about the poor quality of food served to the soldiers. Yadav was already in the fray as an independent candidate from the Varanasi constituency.

The SP is contesting the Lok Sabha polls in alliance with the Bahujan Samaj Party and the Rashtriya Lok Dal in Uttar Pradesh to put a tough challenge to the Bharatiya Janata Party.

As per the seat-sharing pact, the SP is contesting 37 Lok Sabha seats, while Mayawati-led BSP and Ajit Singh’s RLD have been allocated 38 and three seats respectively, ANI has reported.

The Congress party, on the other hand, has repeated its 2014 candidate Ajay Rai to contest the election from Varanasi against PM Modi.

The election in Varanasi is slated to take place in the last phase of seven-phased Lok Sabha elections on 19 May.
