In a major development, former Maldivian president Mohamed Nasheed was injured in a bomb blast outside his family home in the country's capital city of Male on Thursday (6 May), reports Hindustan Times.

Nasheed, who is also the incumbent Speaker of the Maldivian Parliament, sustained multiple injuries in the attack and is currently undergoing treatment at ADK Hospital, as per a statement issued by the police authorities.

Following the bomb attack, Maldivian Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid took to Twitter and said that he "strongly condemned" the attack. He added, "Cowardly attacks like these have no place in our society. My thoughts and prayers are with President Nasheed and others injured in this attack, as well as their families." Shahid too is a member of Nasheed's Maldivian Democratic Party.

As per Maldivian channel PSM, a foreign tourist was also injured in the attack. The channel also showed security services securing the scene of the incident.

It should be noted that Nasheed served as the Maldivian president from 2008 to 2012, and has been serving as the Speaker of its Parliament since May 2019.
