Former President Pranab Mukherjee Passes Away Aged 84

Former President and Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee today (31 August) passed away after battling a prolonged illness. He was 84.

The news of his demise was announced by his son Abhijit Mukherjee.

Mukherjee was admitted to the hospital on 10 August in a critical condition and underwent emergency surgery for a brain clot. He was also found to be Covid-19 positive after being admitted for treatment.

He was put on ventilator support and subsequently developed a lung infection. He was in a deep coma for the last few days.

Mukherjee served as India's 13th President from 2012 to 2017 and was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 2019. A member of the Congress party his political career spanned over five decades, during which he served a senior cabinet minister managing portfolios like Finance, Defence and Ministry of External Affairs.
