Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Girish Chandra Murmu has resigned from his post and will now be replaced by former minister of state for Railways Manoj Sinha.

The resignation came exactly a year after the Central government reorganised Jammu and Kashmir, bifurcating it into two Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.

Murmu has resigned as the J&K LG and his resignation has been accepted by the President Ram Nath Kovind.

A 1985 batch IAS officer of the Gujarat cadre, Murmu was Principal Secretary to Narendra Modi when he was Chief Minister of Gujarat. He became the first Lt Governor of the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir.

Former union minister and Bharatiya Janata Party leader Manoj Sinha will replace Murmu as the new Lieutenant Governor of J&K.

Sinha was a minister in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government between 2014 and 2019 and has handled key ministries like Telecom and Railways.

He was BHU student union president leader and has won Lok Sabha elections twice from Ghazipur in eastern UP. He, however, lost the 2019 polls.
