Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram who was recently released from Tihar Jail on bail in connection with the INX Media scam, spoke in Rajya Sabha in opposition of the Citizenship Amendment Bill.
During his speech, Chidambaram asserted that the bill will not stand judicial test and questioned as to who gave the legal opinion of pertaining to the law.
He also questioned as to why were Sri Lankan Hindus not included in the ambit of the bill and demanded that the Attorney General come to the house and answer the opposition’s questions.
This criticism by Chidambaram was countered by Firstpost journalist Sreemoy Talukdar who pointed out that unlike in countries like Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh, Hindus are not facing religious persecution in Sri Lanka.
He added that Chidambaram’s tacit attempt to pressurise the judiciary in striking down the bill should understand that the judiciary is not above the legislature as noted in the case of Shah Bano.
