German Chancellor Angela Merkel has gone into self-quarantine after it was brought to her knowledge that a doctor who had administered a vaccine to her has contracted the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), reports Economic Times.

The development also gains significance as older adults and people with extant health issues who have gone on to contract COVID-19 have witnessed more severe illness compared to most other people who have exhibited mild and moderate symptoms in general. Merkel is 65-years-old.

The said doctor had administered to Chancellor Merkel a precautionary vaccine against pneumococcal infection on the bygone Friday (20 March). She was informed about the doctor’s contraction of COVID-19 shortly after she had held a press conference in which she had announced new measures to contain the spread of the pandemic in Germany.

In the days to come, Chancellor Merkel will now be subjected to regular tests while she will continue to work from her home.
