The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved a slew of measures to promote the use of innovative mobility solutions in the country.
A National Mission on Transformative Mobility and Battery Storage will be set up by the government to drive clean, connected, shared, sustainable and holistic mobility initiatives. CEO of NITI Aayog will chair an inter-ministerial steering committee for the same.
“The Mission will drive mobility solutions that will bring in significant benefits to the industry, economy and country...These solutions will help improve air quality in cities along with reducing India’s oil import dependence and enhance the uptake of renewable energy and storage solutions,” said a government release.
Under the Mission, a Phased Manufacturing Programme (PMP) will be launched for five years until 2024 to localise production across the entire electric vehicle (EV) value chain.
Also, a PMP scheme will be launched to “support (the) setting up of a few large-scale, export-competitive integrated batteries and cell-manufacturing Giga plants in India.”
The Mobility mission aims to benefit all citizens by promoting ‘Ease of Living.’ It is also expected to enhance the quality of life of the citizens and provide employment opportunities through ‘Make-in-India’ across a range of skill sets.
Charging Infrastructure
Recently, the Union Power Ministry issued guidelines that will provide the necessary framework for setting up charging infrastructure in the country and allow electric car owners to charge these vehicles at their homes and offices.
To incentivise the use and ownership of e-vehicles (EVs), those who charge their EVs at their homes will now be given priority access to electricity from utilities across the country.
