Global Coronavirus Cases Surge To 56.95 Lakh; Covid-19 Death Toll In US Crosses 1 Lakh Mark

The total confirmed cases of Coronavirus infection on Thursday (28 May) surged to over 56.95 lakh globally, while the fatalities due to the deadly virus, which originated in China’s Wuhan city, have increased to more than 3.55 lakh, according to the Johns Hopkins University.

As of Thursday morning, the total number of cases stood at 5,695,155, while the death toll increased to 355,688, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed in its latest update.

As many as 2,351,177 people have recovered from the disease globally, the CSSE data showed.

The US has also reached a grim milestone of over 100,000 Covid-19 deaths.

Currently, the country has 1,699,933 confirmed cases and 100,442 deaths, both tallies account for the highest in the world, according to the CSSE.

Meanwhile, in terms of cases, Brazil comes in second place with 411,821 infections.

This was followed by Russia (370,680), the UK (268,619), Spain (236,259), Italy (231,139), France (183,038), Germany (181,524), Turkey (159,797), India (158,333), Iran (141,591), and Peru (135,905), the CSSE figures showed.

Regarding fatalities, the UK continues in the second position after the US with 37,542 Covid-19 deaths, the highest fatalities in Europe.

The other countries with over 10,000 deaths are Italy (33,072), France (28,599), Spain (27,117), and Brazil (25,598).
